James Kane is a descendant of the famous O`Neill Dynasty of Ulster and in this talk he tells the story of the Siege of Drogheda in 1641 by Irish forces under Sir Phelim O’Neill and the Battle of Julianstown. He also deals with the return to Ireland in 1642 of Owen Roe O’Neill (Eoin Rua Ó Néill) who took command of the Irish forces in an attempt to overturn the Plantation of Ulster. The story ends with the arrival of Cromwell and the sack of Drogheda in 1649.

James O’Kane is Chairperson of the O’Neill Country Historical Society and an Executive Committee Member of the Association of the O’Neill Clans

To coincide with this lecture, a new book, titled, The Battle of Julianstown and the Siege of Drogheda, by Community Historian Brendan Matthews, will be available for the first time on the evening.
