Old Drogheda Society Walk and Talk-Walking Tour of Drogheda
Wednesday Evening July 4th 2018 at 7:30pm
Tour begins at the Tholsel (Corner of West St. & Shop St.) at 7:30pm.
The popular Old Drogheda Society Walk and Talk series continues on Wednesday evening next, July 4th when Liam Reilly will lead the stroll down memory lane on Drogheda's "golden quarter mile, West Street, starting from the Tholsel at 7.30 pm.
The street has changed a lot over the last 50 years with the petrol pumps that were outside various garages disappearing along with 10 of the streets pubs and iconic names such as Woolworths, Andersons, Peter Lyons, Monahans and Harbinsons also gone. Some well known people lived on the street including Eurovision winner Johnny Logan, his dad, Patrick O'Hagan, the internationally known tenor and John Murphy, the man who introduced ten pin bowling into Ireland.
Many others worked there with Ben Dunne, founder of the Dunnes Stores empire, starting his career in Andersons, where he worked with a man who went on to become Garda Commissioner, John Boyle O'Reilly who worked in the Drogheda Argus, which was then located in the premises now occupied by Boyd's Stores, Dragon's Den personality Gavan Duffy, whose family had the Weavers pub.
This busy street carried all the traffic going between Dublin and Belfast, up until the opening of the Bridge of Peace in 1974. It also saw the public hangings of members of the United Irishmen in 1798.
Meet at 7.25 pm outside the Tholsel.
There is no set charge but donations to the Old Drogheda Society will be accepted on the night.
All welcome.
